Son of *Claudius and *Valeria Messal(l)ina, born 12 February 41 ce. His first surname was Germanicus; ‘Britannicus’ was added after Claudius’ invasion of Britain. His stepmother *Iulia Agrippina induced Claudius in 50 to adopt her son L. Domitius (*Nero), who was three years older than Britannicus and so now took precedence over him; and she contrived to remove the tutors and officers of the guard who were loyal to Britannicus, thus ensuring Nero's accession on Claudius’ death (54). Early in 55 Agrippina seems to have considered using Britannicus to prop up her failing influence, but he very soon died, almost certainly poisoned by Nero's order.
