The plain of NW *Peloponnese, famed for horse-breeding. In Classical times it was occupied by a people related by race and language to the Aetolians, arriving from the north.There are fairly extensive remains of Mycenaean occupation, with a concentration near and at *Olympia. Notable too is the evidence for Mycenaean cult and habitation at the ‘Dymaean wall’ on the Araxus promontory and the Mycenaean tumulus at Samikon (PECS ‘Elis’; see pylos). In the Catalogue of the Ships (Il. 2. 592) the boundaries of *Nestor's kingdom extend to the *Alpheus (for the problem thus presented and that of the cattle-raid at Il. 11. 670 ff., see Hainsworth, Iliad.
