Gla (ancient name unknown), a rocky outcrop at the NE end of Lake *Copais in *Boeotia, was surrounded by a massive fortification wall, enclosing some 20 ha., late in the 14th cent. bce. The fortress contained only a few structures, probably intended for administration and storage, in an inner compound; palatial links are shown by the occurrence of frescoes. It was probably built as an extension of the power of *Orchomenus, to control the fertile land released by large-scale drainage projects in Lake Copais. There are traces of destruction, followed by complete abandonment, late in the 13th cent. bce, and scanty remains of activity in Hellenistic and medieval times.
