The northern headland of the bay of Naples (*Neapolis) (reputedly the tomb of *Aeneas' trumpeter Misenus, Verg. Aen. 6. 162 f.) and the adjoining harbour and town. A villa resort in the late republic (the most famous estate belonged to C. *Marius (1), L. *Licinius Lucullus (2), and later to the emperors), it became one of the principal imperial naval bases (with *Ravenna) under Augustus (see navies).
