  • John Frederick Drinkwater

Extract

Maternus, deserter and leader of a major mutiny on the Rhine c. 185/6 ce. His activities indicate military unrest and indiscipline after the wars of Marcus *Aurelius, but not widespread social tension in the west. *Herodian(2)'s report (1. 10. 2–7) that the uprising spread throughout Gaul and into Spain, and that Maternus was killed while attempting to assassinate *Commodus in Rome, is unreliable.
