Summary
Within the criminological literature, little research reflects the relationship between criminal justice–punishment–international political economy (IPE) and transnational organized crime (TOC). However, the dialogue between these disciplines contributes to understand the factors that promote the spread and growth of criminal structures at the transnational level. The literature of the role of prison systems in Latin America and their relations with TOC shows that, in peripheral contexts such as Latin America, where punitivism and precariousness converge, prisons have ceased to be an appendix of a country’s criminal policy and have become a driving force behind TOC.
