Letter from the Editor
Dear Colleagues, Readers, and Visitors,
Welcome to the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies, a joint publication of Oxford University Press and the International Studies Association, and an interdisciplinary resource that has a truly global reach, with an editorial team whose expertise ranges from Latin America to South Asia. As a digital publication, the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies aims to capture the diversity of approaches and research agendas in international studies in an accessible manner.
The Research Encyclopedia is designed to be a resource both for junior researchers and for senior scholars who are interested in various areas of inquiry in international studies. We recognize that being a reference point for a rich and multidisciplinary area of inquiry such as international studies is no easy undertaking. The sheer number of sections, caucuses, and regions under the International Studies Association umbrella illustrates the range of our interests and contributions as international studies scholars. Our authors share an international focus, yet like our readers, they come from different theoretical, disciplinary, and methodological backgrounds. Our peer-reviewed articles aim to provide up-to-date analyses of the state of the literature, trends, and new directions in issue areas ranging from Global Governance to Intelligence Analysis, by experts who are key knowledge-producers in their disciplines and beyond.
As the Editor in Chief, I am not new to this exciting project—I have been involved in various stages of it. The Research Encyclopedia takes its roots from the International Studies Encyclopedia and its subsequent online iteration, the International Studies Association Compendium Project. During my early career years, I served as a coeditor of the Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Migration Studies section’s Compendium volume, alongside Patrick James and Gallya Lahav. I have learned so much from the Compendium, and later from the Research Encyclopedia; every article I read has helped shape my perspective, vision, and ultimately my career. It means a lot to me, personally, to be the Editor in Chief of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies, at a defining time for international relations and the global political landscape, and with a stellar team of editors who have wide global reach and vibrant research profiles.
Our goal is to provide a seamless reference experience to our readers, as they navigate an interdisciplinary and global network of ideas, theories, and approaches. On behalf of our team, I encourage you to explore the wide array of articles to learn, to review, or to be inspired. Do not hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any suggestions for subject areas you would like to see explored. We hope that you will find Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies useful whether you are designing a new course or simply exploring a new research agenda.
