McClatchy, J. D.locked

McClatchy, J. D.locked

Extract

Influential as a poet, critic, and editor at the turn of the twenty-first century, J. D. McClatchy is recognized for his erudition, verbal virtuosity, and interest in traditional poetic forms. He is also known for his friendship with the older poet James Merrill, whose literary executor he became after Merrill's death in 1995. Like his mentor, McClatchy writes with elegant lyricism and witty wordplay. The elaborately polished surfaces of his early poems make it difficult to see more than their artful shimmer, but the technical mastery displayed in his later work allows his deeper moral concerns to shine through.
