Extract

Three decades after David Mamet began writing for the stage, he is readily acknowledged to be among America's leading playwrights. His more than two dozen plays have enjoyed stage success and critical acclaim surpassing the work of most of his contemporaries. His awards, too numerous to list in their entirety, include the Obie Award, the Joseph Jefferson Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. His highly provocative and continually evolving body of work has prompted a number of scholarly studies in the 1990s.
