Extract

Richard Hugo was born Richard Franklin Hogan on 21 December 1923 in White Center, a suburb south of Seattle, Washington. Before he was a year old his mother, Esther Clara Monk Hogan, turned him over to be raised by his grandparents, Fred and Ora Monk. A few years later, now divorced from Hugo's father, Esther married Herbert E. Hugo but did not retrieve her son from his grandparents. Hugo recalled a childhood in a strict household run by people who were both too old and too poor to raise a child. Shortly before he joined the Army Air Corps in 1943, he changed his name to Richard Hugo.
