Jarrell, Randalllocked

  • Philip Hobsbaum

Extract

Randall Jarrell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, to Owen Jarrell and Anna Campbell Jarrell on 6 May 1914. His parents were, respectively, twenty and nineteen. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Long Beach, California, where his father, who had been a bookkeeper, worked in a photographer's studio. His parents separated in 1925, and while his mother and younger brother, Charles, returned to Nashville, Jarrell remained in Hollywood for a year with his paternal grandparents and great-grandmother. He wept when he was brought back to Nashville, where he lived with his mother and brother through his school and even his college years, helping out by doing such jobs as delivering newspapers.
