Extract

Against her wishes, Katherine Anne Porter's literary reputation rests on her expertise as a stylist. “I've been called a stylist until I really could tear my hair out,” she said in a 1963 interview. “I simply don't believe in style. The style is you.” Porter is considered one of the finest American short story writers of the twentieth century primarily because of her precise and highly visual stories that reveal unsettling truths about human nature. A woman devoted to her career and artistic excellence, Porter helped shape modern American literature with fiction drawn from ordinary life but exploring profound human issues.
