David Jeddie Smith was born on 19 December 1942 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Virginia, and was then educated at Southern Illinois University, where he earned an M.A. degree. He received a Ph.D. in 1976 from Ohio University, where he was able to write a creative writing dissertation. His poetry has earned him many awards and recognitions, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Lyndhurst Foundation. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for both Goshawk, Antelope (1979) and Dream Flights (1981).
