Islamic Bioethics: The Sunnahlocked

Summary

The word Sunnah refers to the classical Islamic texts that portray the way or custom the Prophet Muḥammad followed during his life. The word then developed gradually and was used in Islamic texts to convey various ideas. In the ḥadīth corpus, the term indicates the way or the custom that was followed by the Prophet and his companions, particularly the first four Caliphs. Moreover, in the field of Islamic bioethics, the role of Sunnah as a way of the Prophet can be seen through two verses in the Qurʾān. Connecting the lexical meaning of Sunnah and the two verses of “excellent model” and “mighty morality” is important for examining how Sunnah serves as a significant source which can guide Muslims on the ways to approach and conceive Islamic ethics and bioethics.
