Summary

Eglantyne Jebb (1876–1928) was a passionate campaigner against oppression and poverty in the early 20th century, founder of the Save the Children organization, and an early thinker about international social work. She authored the first (Geneva) Declaration of Children’s Rights, adopted by the League of Nations—the forerunner of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. An early settlement and Charity Organization Society worker, she was an inspiration to activist women of a younger generation, using writing and influencing skills, and author of a survey of local social services that was a model to later researchers.
