Summary

Alex Gitterman was a distinguished social work educator and scholar. He was a faculty member at the Columbia University School of Social Work from 1966 to 2000. He then joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Social Work, where he served from 2000 to 2024. Gitterman was renowned for his impact as a teacher and mentor and for his intellectual prowess. He is best known as coauthor of The Life Model of Social Work Practice, first published with Carel Germain in 1980, with its fourth edition released in 2021. Gitterman was a prolific author and frequent presenter at professional conferences, writing about and discussing topics ranging from mutual aid and group work to social work education and field instruction. In recognition of his many accomplishments, Gitterman received numerous awards for his teaching and scholarship.
