Tiberius, the emperor (Tiberius Iulius Caesar Augustus), was the son of Ti. *Claudius Nero and *Livia Drusilla, born 16 November 42 bce. After public service in Spain with *Augustus (Suet.Tib. 8), Tiberius was quaestor in 23 bce, five years earlier than normal. From 20 bce, when he crowned the Roman nominee *Tigranes(2) in Armenia, until ce 12, when he returned to Rome after retrieving the situation on the Rhine after the Varian disaster (ce 9; see quinctilius varus, p.), Tiberius' military career was uniformly successful. In 15 and 14 bce he completed with Drusus the conquest of the *Alps; from M. *Vipsanius Agrippa's death in 12 until 9 bce he was reducing *Pannonia; from Drusus' death to 7 bce and again from ce 4 to 6 he campaigned in Germany.
