Endymion (Ἐνδυμίων), a handsome mortal with whom the moon-goddess, *Selene, fell in love; according to the scholiast on Apollonius Rhodius 4. 57 f. (who adds much other detail), the story was already alluded to in Sappho. He now sleeps eternally in a cave on Mt. Latmus in Caria (see heraclea (2)), where his lover visits him periodically—no doubt during the dark phase of the lunar month.
